Getting to Mildford Sounds

Domestic travel options and tips to get around the South Island

Milford Sound is located in the heart of Fiordland National Park on New Zealand's South Island. While remote, this spectacular destination is accessible year-round through multiple transport options. The journey itself is considered one of the world's most scenic drives, making your travel an integral part of the adventure.

From Queenstown - 290km | 4 hours

Self-Drive Option

Take State Highway 6 towards Kingston, then follow State Highway 97 through Mossburn to Te Anau. After a recommended stop in Te Anau for supplies and fuel, continue on State Highway 94 (Milford Road) to Milford Sound.

The entire journey takes approximately 4 hours without stops, but we recommend allowing 5-6 hours to enjoy scenic viewpoints and short walks along the way.

Coach Tours

Daily coach services depart Queenstown between 6:30am and 8:00am, including scenic stops at Mirror Lakes, Eglinton Valley, and Monkey Creek.

Professional drivers provide commentary and handle challenging road conditions, particularly valuable during winter months. Most coaches include return journey with cruise package options.

Scenic Flights

Experience breathtaking 45-minute flights over the Southern Alps, Lake Wakatipu, and Fiordland National Park.

Fixed-wing and helicopter options available with multiple daily departures. Combination packages include cruise and return coach or flight options. Weight restrictions apply (typically 115kg per passenger).

From Te Anau - 120km | 2.5 hours

The Milford Road Experience; this spectacular alpine highway winds through ancient beech forests, past cascading waterfalls, and through the hand-hewn Homer Tunnel. Departure from Te Anau is recommended before 8:30am to avoid peak traffic through the tunnel and secure parking at Milford Sound. The road is sealed but narrow and winding in sections.

Essential Stops Along the Way:

  • Mirror Lakes (10 minutes): Perfect reflections of surrounding mountains
  • Lake Gunn Nature Walk (45 minutes): Easy loop track through red beech forest
  • The Chasm (20 minutes): Powerful waterfalls carved through solid rock
  • Homer Tunnel: 1.2km unlit tunnel, opened in 1953 after 19 years of construction

From Invercargill - 280km | 3.5 hours
